Welcome Father Ferdi! We welcome our Lenten Mission Preacher, Father Ferdi Santos, to St. Ambrose this weekend. Many of you remember Father from his years residing here at St. Ambrose while teaching at Providence College. In January he returned to St. John Vianney Seminary in Miami to resume teaching philosophy. I was able to prevail on him to come north for his Spring Break and lead our parish on a Lenten Mission. We are grateful for his willingness to come back again to St. Ambrose. His Mission is aptly entitled “Taken, Blessed, Broken and Shared: Anchoring our Everyday Lives in the Eucharist.” He will preach at all the Masses this weekend and then offer further reflections at the Mission Masses on Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday nights at 7:00PM. On Wednesday night several visiting priests join us to hear Confessions. Confessions start at 6:00PM on Wednesday, February 29th, and continue until the beginning of Mass at 7:00PM.
This is a great Lenten opportunity to deepen our faith and understanding of the Eucharist in our lives. Also it is truly a time to make a good Confession and prepare for a joyous celebration of Easter. So I encourage you to come out for the Mission Masses and to seek out God’s love and mercy in Confession. It will make for a great start of this important and holy season of Lent.
One of our newest Cardinals, Archbishop Timothy Dolan of New York, offered a timely reflection this week on his recent trip to Rome to be elevated to the College of Cardinals. He writes: “It’s usually one of the very first things I do on my first full day back in Rome. Early in the morning, I walk down to Saint Peter’s Basilica, to go to confession and then to celebrate Mass. Two powerful sacraments, Eucharist and Reconciliation, constants of our spiritual life, at the heart of the church, near the tomb of Saint Peter. I don’t want you to think that I only approach confession when I’m in Rome! At home with you in New York I try to go every two weeks, because I need it. But it does have a special urgency and meaning here in Rome. Near the tomb of Saint Peter, I can hear Jesus ask Him three times: “Simon, do you love me?” and then examine my conscience to see how I have failed to love the Lord and take care of his sheep. Near his tomb, I picture myself, like Saint Peter, doubting Jesus and sinking in the waters of the storm. Adjacent to his burial place, I even admit that, like Peter, I have, in my thoughts, words, and actions, denied Jesus. So my contrition is strong, my purpose of amendment firm, and I approach one of the Franciscans for confession in the corner of the massive basilica. Then I say my penance before the tomb of Peter, under the high altar, and go to vest for the greatest prayer of all, the Holy Sacrifice of the Mass. Sometime over those forty days leading up to Easter, take a cue from your archbishop: get back to confession.”
So please join us this week for the Mission and Confession. God Bless.

After last week’s Masses many parishioners asked me what action could be taken against the unfair Health and Human Services Healthcare mandate. First, I encourage you to pray for a just resolution to this infringement on our liberty. Pray for our President, Congress and country, pray for our Church, bishops and all who serve Her, pray for the poor, the sick and the needy we serve. May this unfair mandate by our government upon our Church soon be rejected and rescinded.
Secondly, in this week’s bulletin there is an insert that directs you to the proper action to take in contacting our R.I. Congressional delegation. It includes websites where you can find accurate information regarding this serious threat to our religious freedoms as Catholics. I strongly encourage you to call Senators Reed and Whitehouse and Congressmen Langevin and Cicciline and voice your concern about this matter. I also caution you that much of the reporting in the secular media on this issue is misleading and incomplete. Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia recently stated quite correctly last week: “Catholics should not be misled into accepting feeble compromises on issues of principle. The HHS mandate is bad law; and not merely bad, but dangerous and insulting. It needs to be withdrawn—now.”
This Wednesday we begin the Season of Lent as we again commit ourselves to forty days of prayer, fasting and almsgiving. The Mass Schedule for Ash Wednesday is in the bulletin and I hope you turn out to begin the forty days of Lent properly. The cry goes out across the globe on Wednesday: “Repent and believe in the Gospel!” It is a time as Pope Benedict XVI reminds us in his Lenten Message: “to reflect upon the very heart of Christian life: charity. This is a favorable time to renew our journey of faith, both as individuals and as a community, with the help of the word of God and the sacraments. This journey is one marked by prayer and sharing, silence and fasting, in anticipation of the joy of Easter.”
Lent is about the “Three Ps” of prayer, penance and the poor. It is our time to take up more prayer time in our busy lives. How will you do so this Lent? Come to Daily Mass? Read the Bible every day? Pray the Rosary daily? Come to the Parish Mission? Make the Stations of the Cross? It is our time to do penance and repent of our sinful and selfish ways. How will you do so this Lent? Give up something like candy or liquor? Help at a soup kitchen or homeless shelter? Be kinder and more charitable in your words and deeds? It is our time to help the poor and give alms. How will you do so this Lent? Support our Parish Food Drive? Put your dollars and cents in the Rice Bowl? Sacrifice an expensive pleasure to help the poor?
Father Ferdi Santos is to lead us on our Annual Parish Lenten Mission at all the Masses next week. Those of you who know Father can attest what a great preacher he is and the challenging message he delivers. I hope you seize the opportunity to join us for this important spiritual event in the life of our parish. Lent is coming! Are you ready? God Bless.

Six Things Everyone Should Know About the HHS Mandate

1.The rule that created the uproar has not changed at all, but was finalized as is. Friday evening, after a day of touting meaningful changes in the mandate, HHS issued a regulation finalizing the rule first issued in August 2011, “without change.” So religious employers dedicated to serving people of other faiths are still not exempt as “religious employers.” Indeed, the rule describes them as “non-exempt.”

2. The rule leaves open the possibility that even exempt “religious employers” will be forced to cover sterilization. In its August 2011 comments, USCCB warned that the narrow “religious employer” exemption appeared to provide no relief from the sterilization mandate—only the contraception mandate—and specifically sought clarification.(We also noted that a sterilization mandate exists in only one state, Vermont.)HHS provided no clarification, so the risk remains under the unchanged final rule.

3. The new “accommodation” is not a current rule, but a promise that comes due beyond the point of public accountability. Also on Friday evening, HHS issued regulations describing the intention to develop more regulations that would apply the same mandate differently to “non-exempt, non-profit religious organizations”—the charities, schools, and hospitals that are still left out of the “religious employer” exemption. These policies will be developed over a one-year delay in enforcement, so if they turn out badly, their impact will not be felt until August 2013, well after the election.

4. Even if the promises of “accommodation” are fulfilled entirely, religious charities, schools, and hospitals will still be forced to violate their beliefs. If an employee of these second-class-citizen religious institutions wants coverage of contraception or sterilization, the objecting employer is still forced to pay for it as a part of the employer’s insurance plan. There can be no additional cost to that employee, and the coverage is not a separate policy. By process of elimination, the funds to pay for that coverage must come from the premiums of the employer and fellow employees, even those who object in conscience.

5. The “accommodation” does not even purport to help objecting insurers, for-profit religious employers, secular employers, or individuals. In its August 2011 comments, and many times since, USCCB identified all the stakeholders in the process whose religious freedom is threatened—all employers, insurers, and individuals, not just religious employers. Friday’s actions emphasize that all insurers, including self-insurers, must provide the coverage to any employee who wants it. In turn, all individuals who pay premiums have no escape from subsidizing that coverage. And only employers that are both non-profit and religious may qualify for the “accommodation.”

6. Beware of claims, especially by partisans, that the bishops are partisan. The bishops and their staff read regulations before evaluating them. The bishops did not pick this fight in an election year—others did. Bishops form their positions based on principles—here, religious liberty for all, and the life and dignity of every human person—not polls, personalities, or political parties. Bishops are duty bound to proclaim these principles, in and out of season.

state. Rhode Island’s statues honor Roger Williams and Nathaniel Greene (does anyone know who he is? Revolutionary War General!). There are five statues that honor Catholic heroes.
Mother Joseph of the Sisters of Providence is honored by Washington State. In the 19th century she built hospitals, schools and orphanages in what was then the great Northwest Territory. One of California’s statues honors Blessed Junipero Serra the Franciscan priest who established missions in the 18th century to minister to the needs of the native people from San Diego to San Francisco.
Jesuit Father Jacques Marquette represents Wisconsin. He was 17th Century French missionary who ministered to the native peoples and immigrants all throughout the Mississippi River region of Wisconsin, Michigan and Minnesota. Father Eusebio Kino was a Jesuit Missionary who spent decades in the late 17the century ministering to the Southwest native peoples in Arizona and New Mexico.
But perhaps the most well-known Catholic hero is memorialized by the State of Hawaii. It is Father Damien, the Leper Priest from Belgium who sacrificed his own life for the lepers of the island of Molokai. The lepers of Molokai loved Father Damien who accepted, loved and served them no matter
their faith. For this reason, Father Damien is considered one of the preeminent heroes of Hawaii and a Saint of our Church. Why would Father Damien serve these lepers? Why would he expose himself to the dreaded disease?
Because like all those Catholic heroes and heroines in the US Capitol and beyond: that’s who we are as Church. We minister in imitation of Christ, to anyone and everyone who is in need of healing and
love. In today’s Gospel Jesus illustrates this as heals a leper. Lepers were called the “Living Dead” and the law forbade them to approach non-lepers. Yet Jesus cures him despite this policy. Jesus always associated with those known to be off-limits, unclean or ritually impure—sinners, the sick, tax collectors, prostitutes, foreigners and even lepers. Why did He do this? Because that’s who the Son of God is! Even a leper could approach him and find a welcome and receive healing.
On Friday the President announced a so-called “accommodation” to the recent Department of Health and Human Services policy that all but a few employers are to be mandated by law to provide and pay for health coverage that includes all forms of contraception including the morning-after abortion pill and sterilization services. There are no exemptions for Catholic hospitals, colleges, schools, nursing homes or social service agencies. The President said he would retain the nationwide mandate of insurance coverage for these services our Church teaches are immoral then he announced some changes in how that mandate is to be administered, which is still unclear in its details.
But let’s be very clear about what did happen on Friday: it was simply an admission that his policy which was crafted by the ACLU and blessed by Planned Parenthood, threatened religious freedom specifically the religious liberty of our Church. In other words, on Friday the President conceded he wasn’t the Pope!
Let me be perfectly clear, this controversy goes far beyond whether or not someone agrees with the Church’s teachings about birth control and abortion. My friends, this is about our fundamental rights as human beings and our religious freedom as Catholics and Americans. It is about who we are and what we do as Church.
The President’s policy still says that our hospitals, our universities, our nursing homes and our schools are not “religious” enough to be exempted because they serve non-Catholics and employ non-Catholics. Yet we know that these ministries of our Church are expressions of our Catholic faith, a faith that calls us to serve all. The centuries’ old ministries of Our Church to serve, educate and heal are shared for the common good of our entire nation, Catholic and non-Catholic alike. The President’s policy still demeans our Church’s ministry in this country and our steadfast commitments to helping all those in need, serving the Catholic and non-Catholic poor, educating children of every creed and healing all people no matter their religion in our hospitals. Even as a non-Catholic President Obama knows this very well because his first job as a community organizer was funded by the Catholic Church to serve the common good of all not just Catholics.
So for him to suggest that Providence College, Fatima Hospital, Mt. St. Rita’s Nursing Home, Emmanuel Homeless Shelter or LaSalle Academy are not significantly religious enough because they educate, heal, and serve non-Catholics is not only unnecessary, it is a clear violation of our religious liberties. We know that we as a Church are more than a community of faith who merely go to Mass on Sundays. We know that our Catholic faith requires action too. As Church we live in the Lord every day of the week not only Sundays and we serve our brothers and sisters of every creed not just Catholics. The Catholic heroes whose images grace the US Capitol, served and ministered to anyone and everyone, Catholic or not. They did so in imitation of Jesus, the Jesus who despite a mandate against it heals the leper in today’s gospel.
Brothers and sisters, that is who we are as Church, called to serve all not to be selective of some, called to be imitators of Christ every day, in every place, with every person. For the President of the United States to suggest that this is not who we are as a Church is a grave insult. For him to allow the ACLU to insist that we must violate our conscience because we follow the gospel mandate to serve all, even non-Catholic lepers, is deeply offensive. For him to let Planned Parenthood force our Catholic institutions and agencies to compromise our values and ethics and disregard their mission and ministry is contrary to all we believe not only as Catholics but also as Americans.
“Brothers and sisters,” as St. Paul writes to the Corinthians in today’s second reading: ‘whatever you do, do everything for the glory of God not seeking your own benefit but that of the many, Be imitators of me, as I am of Christ.” Imitators of Christ we as a Church have been for centuries and imitators of Christ we shall always continue to be. No President and certainly no misguided policy must ever be allowed to stop our faithful imitation of Jesus Christ, not yesterday, not today, not tomorrow, and not ever! Viva Christo Rey!

I don’t know who was more depressed on Monday Tom Brady or me! It was a great game but not a great ending, better luck next year. Not to worry, Major League Baseball spring training starts soon, go Sox! My New York Giants loving brother-in-law and his daughters (my own nieces!) cruelly rubbed it in with their gloating texts at the end of the Superbowl. My poor sister, a tried and true Pats’ Fan, has to live with them all in New York, pray for her! We will see the Giants again!!!!
On a happier note I am pleased to announce our Lenten Parish Mission is to take place beginning on the weekend of February 25/26. Our Mission Preacher this year is Father Ferdi Santos who served here for many years. Father has recently returned from his home diocese in the Philippines to again take up teaching philosophy at St. John Vianney Seminary in Miami. He is a great preacher with a powerful message so I fully expect a great Lenten Mission. The Mission begins with the Weekend masses and
continues with a Mission Mass at 7:00PM on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. So be sure to mark your calendars now and come out for the Mission. It is hard to believe but Lent is around the corner with Ash Wednesday on February 22nd. Along with our Mission we will have Stations of the Cross each Friday night at 7:00PM during Lent.
This weekend the Church marks the twentieth Annual World Day of Prayer for the Sick. Every year on February 11th, the Feast of Our Lady of Lourdes, the Church calls upon us to pray for those who are sick and suffering and also remember in prayer those who minister and serve the sick in hospitals, nursing homes and at home. So please take a few moments this weekend to pray for someone you know who is sick and for any nurse, doctor or healthcare worker you might know. Many of our own parishioners are sick so pray for them: “To Our Lady of Lourdes who is Mary, Mother of Mercy and Health of the Sick, we raise our trusting gaze and our prayer; may her maternal compassion, manifested as she stood beside her dying Son on the Cross, accompany and sustain the faith and the hope of every sick and suffering person on the journey of healing for the wounds of body and spirit!”
I would remind you that the parish is NOT notified when you enter the hospital. Federal Privacy Laws prevent hospitals from notifying parishes of those parishioners in the hospital. So I encourage you to notify the Rectory if someone is in the hospital, moved to a nursing home or even sick at home. Never assume we know who is sick and where they are located. If you need the Sacrament of the Sick for sickness or before a surgery, please let us know. Also when in a hospital you should let them know you are a Catholic who would like to receive Holy Communion and ask for the Catholic Chaplain. God Bless. Get ready Lent is coming!!

Dear Parishioners:
You have probably taken note of the budget income figures each week which shows that what we receive often fluctuates. In these stressful economic times, most everyone either feels the pinch or feels inclined to be cautious about giving “just in case.” Of course, that is natural enough but it seriously affects our income level. Additionally, our income is hurt by the loss of regular contributors who die and those who move to assisted care facilities. The absence of these venerable and faithful parishioners leaves a very large gap. And that gap is not being filled by the presence of their children or grandchildren since the church practice of these generations is so different from preceding ones.
A third factor in our income loss is the mobility pattern of people’s current lifestyles. More than ever, it seems, families are away on a weekend attending their children’s activities, family social events and other occasions that lead to many of our parishioners not being with us at Mass on a weekly basis. And this lack of regular attendance at Sunday Mass also translates into an inconsistent income pattern. Just as every household banks on a weekly paycheck or a monthly retirement check, the parish needs consistent weekly/monthly income to survive.
So we need to address the matter of inconsistency. Some budget users make sure to contribute their offering for weeks when they are not with us. Others do not. For those who make their offering in cash it usually depends on what they have at hand while in church. The new Parish Giving Program is an attempt to remedy this serious situation for our parish. It is a simple program that involves registering on line, indicating the amount you would like to have withdrawn from your bank checking account and authorizing the company to withdraw it on a certain day each month or week. You may also indicate what special collections you wish to contribute to. Your contribution will be deposited with us automatically. Parishioners who are regularly absent will find this a convenient and reliable way to support the parish consistently. For those who are always here for Mass, this method wouldn’t make any difference. For those uncomfortable with electronic technology, it may not be feasible. But for many, it will serve as a convenience; a relief and a way of helping the parish stay on track financially. Remember that this is an optional program but please also remember how important your consistent giving is to the parish for our financial health and well-being today and in the future.
Thank you for considering this opportunity. I encourage you to please take advantage of it if as it will help you to help your parish. If you have any questions or concerns after receiving the material, please don’t hesitate to ask me. Together we can keep our parish financially sound and viable for the future. It’s Superbowl Sunday! Enjoy the big game and be sure to root our New England Patriots on to victory over those gamely Giants. Go Brady! Go Gronk! Go Pats! God Bless!!

Well my N.Y. Giants loving brother-in-law texted me immediately after his team won their Championship Game last Sunday night. He was quick to remind me that he had predicted next week’s Superbowl rematch between the Patriots and Giants. Last week’s games were truly exciting and came complete with dramatic endings. So now we await with anticipation and excitement the big game next Sunday night. I can hardly wait to text my brother-in-law next week after our victory! Go Pats!
Last week we mailed out our Annual Financial Statements to every registered household. These statements are provided for your preparation of your 2011 Federal and State Income Tax Returns. If there are any inaccuracies found in your statement, please call our Parish Secretary, Mrs. Sandra Demers, and we will correct any mistakes and issue a new statement. Again let me thank those parishioners who are so generous in supporting our parish with their weekly donations. As you know from managing your own household budgets, not much gets cheaper and our parish expenses for oil, heat, electricity, healthcare, insurance and maintenance never go away. We rely completely on your good will and generous support to meet our expenses and your regular weekly support is critical to planning our budget and keeping fiscal integrity.
Surprisingly we discovered that of the 622 registered households in the parish only 227 families contribute on a weekly basis. The average weekly gift for these 227 parishioners is $15. Many parishioners did not donated at all this year and many others only donate sporadically during the year. We cannot maintain the fiscal integrity of our parish and prepare for a vital future unless every parishioner willing shares in the financial support of the parish.
In order to help all parishioners to be able to support the parish financially and make it easier in this modern age of technology to do so, we are introducing another option for support of the parish. It is called Electronic Funds Transfer (EFT) and is provided to our parish with the help of the Parish Giving Company. This is an voluntary and optional program for those who wish to utilize it. EFT allows the use of a credit card or bank account to electronically contribute to the parish. This type of automated transfer of funds is a common practice in business and becoming a more common option for church financial support. You will receive a letter explaining the program in more detail. I have been using EFT for three months for my own contributions to the parish and I can attest that it works extremely well. Thanks again for your generous weekly support and steadfast commitment to our wonderful parish. Encourage and challenge your friends and neighbors to do the same! God Bless. Go Pats!

No doubt the Tim Tebow doubters were all smiling last weekend as the New England Patriots dominated the Denver Broncos. It was a great game if you are a fan of Tom Brady and the Pats. However, one of the most intriguing and interesting things that happened during the television broadcast of the game was a commercial. The “Focus on the Family” commercial shown during the game was a great example of what faith is truly all about. It was simple and to the point, showing kids reciting the words of The Gospel of John (JN 3:16.) It is the verse that Tim Tebow used to scribble under his eye on game day. It shows a group of happy kids telling the world: “For God so loved the world — The whole world. Everyone. Anyone. That’s a lot of people! – that he gave his one and only son – his only son — That whoever believes in him will not perish but will have eternal life. Wow!” It was truly terrific and made a great game even better for me!
It certainly was a more positive development than the recent decision by a Federal Judge to insist that Cranston West High School remove a prayer banner that has hung, largely unnoticed, in the school’s auditorium for decades. There seems to be a renewed effort across our nation to remove God and faith from having any role or even presence in the public square. As the saga continues let us pray for the young girl and her family who brought the lawsuit as well as all the students of Cranston West. We might offer the prayer that is now covered over in the school’s auditorium: “Our Heavenly Father, Grant us each day the desire to do our best, To grow mentally and morally as well as physically, To be kind and helpful to our classmates and teachers, To be honest with ourselves as well as with others, Help us to be good sports and smile when we lose as well as when we win, Teach us the value of true friendship, Help us always to conduct ourselves so as to bring credit to Cranston High School West. Amen.”
This Sunday is the 39th Anniversary of the Supreme Court decision, Roe v. Wade, which legalized abortion in our nation. As the U.S. Bishops remind us: “as God recognized each of us before we were born, and called us by name, so too may we recognize the value of each human life and pledge ourselves to continue to defend and nurture God’s greatest gift to us.”
On Monday thousands are to march in Washington, DC in protest of this tragic decision. Among the marchers is our own Father Kiley who is joining with hundreds of Rhode Island Catholics making the trek to Washington for the March for Life. Let us join in prayer for the marchers and for an end to abortion and an increase of respect for all human life from womb to tomb. I hope you join Troop 711 next Saturday for the Annual Scout Mass. God Bless. Go Pats!
